DEENA'S DOCKET: E10 - Lessons on Morality

Deena's Docket SURVIVOR PHOENIX

Is there no honor among thieves? Evidently the answer to that, at least for the Balboa tribe, is no. I understand the necessity for lying, cheating, and backstabbing, but selling out Granny?! Come on now, Jon, and to some extent Sandra, has taken this game to a whole new level. This has become a game without morals or ethics.

I would like to give you all some insight as to what the various cast members were thinking when they watched this last episode. To do so I have to take yet another trip down memory lane, so pardon my regurgitation. For me, the most disappointing aspect of this game is that I did not survive until the family visits. My husband, who was within 12 hours of departure to the Amazon, did not get to board a plane. To me that is what I feel I lost out on most; the ability for my husband to share a lifetime experience with me.

If this had that great of an impact on me from the losing side, just think what it means for those who get to share in the visit, the experience. Remember Kathy and Jenna and countless others who suddenly got the burst of energy and that last little push to the end days. Perhaps it was a redirection from “why am I doing this to myself” and a reorientation to “this is who I am doing it for”. After having lasted that many days in suck-wad conditions with people you can barely tolerate and then seeing someone that you know and love that has contact with the outside world is like bringing you back to reality. You focus on what is important like winning what is ultimately, nothing more than just a game.

I note these mental hardships and boosts to give some perspective on how truly despicable Jon’s act was. Balboa threw the game and handed to him, on a silver platter, the reward. What did they get in return? It was a cold night with no food. Yes the other tribesmen got to see their family for a brief period of time but with little interaction. Perhaps more time with the hubby, with lusty thoughts lingering would have brought a smile to the otherwise frown-faced and unhappy Lil. Had Christa spent the evening with her fiancé maybe, just maybe there would have been some hot and heavy intermingling. I for one am tired of the child and parent reunions. Jon and his friend offered nothing better.

So the question at least in my mind is, do the ends justify the means? I was questioned at length about what steps I would take to win the million dollars. Obviously as a prosecutor I have a heavy burden when I appear in front of a jury. I must be ethical and honest at all times, in every aspect of my life. I have a code of ethics. I did not nor would I ever violate that code. So Jonny Fairplay sold out his Granny and his tribesman for a few hours of comfort from home. Perhaps it even saved him a few votes down the road, but the cost my friends will be high.

Remember the whole animosity thing. I venture to say that his tribesmen will hold him accountable for quite sometime. After all, he stole from them. What worth does a man have if he gains the whole world but loses his soul? The million dollars that Jon might win (unlikely though) will not be enough to repair the damage. People do not soon forget and I am not just talking about the other 15 in this game.

Sandra too has some splainin’ to do. I do however find her silence to be much more palatable than Jon’s overt acts. To me her silence was a representation of disloyalty more than anything. Christa was simply a casualty of the game and fortunately her life was not snuffed because of it, at least not yet. But I still don’t get it. Sandra wanted to punish the tribe for voting out Rupert but she, in essence, did so as well by voting for Jon. I too would have been hard pressed to own up to dumping the fish. But, me thinks that is not what happened, that she “tripped” and sent the fish flying. I think she did it on purpose and then lied about it at confessional. I am not alone in this supposition.

Still, many viewers have a tendency to see this game from only one vantage point; it is all in the editing. Some clearly are edited as heroes and some as villains. You may even want to think that Sandra sold Christa out. But she didn’t really. So much is made about alliances and friendships and the like. But this is just a game. Sandra was willing to keep silent and in essence lie about the fish because she had other loyalties. Perhaps the one loyalty that they will all keep is to themselves. Sandra was not willing to sacrifice her own position in the game just for the sake of honesty for a fellow tribesman that will probably have little interaction with her once she gets back to the real world. I would probably have done the same thing. Sandra has known Christa for 30 days, which, comparatively speaking is a drop in the bucket compared to her relationship to her family and her loyalty to her husband. That is where her true alliance should be, not to a virtual stranger.

I do not mean to intonate or suggest that I condone this immoral or amoral activity, I just want to explain why it is happening and in my opinion happening with more frequency. A million dollars can go a long way to help out one’s position in life and clearly people are willing to go to great lengths to get it.

Be aware all those risk takers though, because it is the non-entities that will sneak up and take what you feel you may have earned. I am of course speaking of Lil and Darrah. Neither have made bold moves or been leaders. They wait and watch and do what is expected of them. Darrah is an active non-participant (people come to her), whereas Lil is just going along. Both are major threats and none of the people in position of power can see it. The power players will take a non-power player with them to the finals thinking that the jury will vote for them because they “played” (See Jenna’s choice of Matt over Rob). But all those dirty deeds and disloyal conduct may come back to bite you in the end. Maybe the nice guy or girl will finish first this time.

Should there be honor amongst the thieves? The general consensus is an absolute no. We tune in week after week to see which tribe mate will get screwed. This season would be very boring indeed without the likes of Jon or Sandra. I was a casualty of that same war, a war without rules. Yes, I played fair and did not win. But, I do not measure my wealth with dollars and cents.
