SURVIVOR QUOTES

I can honestly say that it has been Rob and I that have engineered this whole turnaround, and it's not the battle of the sexes anymore, but the battle of the weaker versus the stronger. Never underestimate the power of a woman, ever.

DEENA'S DOCKET: E9 - bang-a-rang

Deena's Docket SURVIVOR PHOENIX

They say that time heals all wounds. I tend to agree but with the following proviso, that the wounds still leave a scar.

This weekend I participated in the “VH1 Big in ’03” event. Practically every reality series that hit the waves this year had a “star” representative. There were over a 100 people. Survivor Amazon though had more “stars” than did any other show. Heidi, Alex, Dave, Roger, Jeanne, Joanna, Ryan, Daniel, Shawna, and myself were in attendance and we had a fantastic time. There was a marked difference in this mini reunion as compared to the real reunion. I noted after the first reunion, perhaps with some alacrity, that the animosity still ran deep amongst some of the members. Clearly, it has dissipated with time.

We were interviewed at length, collectively and individually, about the trials and tribulations of a Survivor season. But the producer noted that of all the groups, we seemed very close and that we were genuinely happy to see each other. Not so of many of the other reality television series. And it’s true; we are members of the family, every one of us.

I use the term family because as you have heard the old adage, you can choose your friends but not your family. We have a common bond and one that will never go away. If your experience was good or bad it was still one that was shared with 15 others. The sixteen of us went through heaven and hell while we were in South America and nobody can ever take that experience away from us. Winners, all of us.

Rupert, in his confessional had the right idea. The booted players need not feel bad because they were leaving as winners having not only made the jury but played the game. I understand his point. Hopefully he will understand his own point some day too. Speaking of Rupert, where did he go wrong? To use an oft-used phrase of California legal jargon, it was the “Exclusionary Rule” kill. He attempted to rule to the exclusion of all others and got his torched snuffed out because of it. But he still leaves a winner, doesn’t he?

The greatest player ever, in my opinion, was Richard Hatch. He wrote the book on how to survive at Survivor. He provided fish but not too much so the tribe was dependent upon him. He organized the alliances. He lied, he cheated, and he while he lost on purpose, he won when he needed to. He was the ultimate alpha male in his tribe and everybody knew it. I personally could not wait till he was voted out but that never happened. (I am holding out for the snuff in ASS!)

As far as I am concerned no true alpha male or female will ever win again. Rupert was too powerful, too much of a threat. The worst thing in the world was the outcasts coming back to the game. Having lived through one defeat, they played this game with experience. I even give credit to Lil for having lied. But the real power move was with Burton who was strong enough and smart enough to oust Rupert. But mark my words, Burton is none too safe anymore either. He needs to play like he is not playing, like Rob C. from the Amazon.

There are some real “players” in this game and I have to give them credit. As much as I hate to admit it, Jon is playing it like the weasel he is. Not very many give him credit, but we should give him his due. After all, he seems to be in the best position vote after vote. He comes across as a tool, yet is he really? Johnny Fairplay is really a pain in my, well, you know… He is a player we all love to hate.

Certainly we know that at least one other player has it in for Jon. Did my eyes deceive me or did Sandra not cast a vote for the weasel? I am a bit baffled. Her main power point, Rupert clearly planned to oust Darrah. All were told to vote accordingly which would have resulted in a tie with Rupert and Darrah. But with Sandra voting for Jon, Rupert would have been voted out anyway. I think she is planning ahead, way ahead, to the finals. I think she might be playing both sides better than Jon. There is a secret deal somewhere that we do not know about. Perhaps Sandra was allowed to cast a vote for Jon to protect her from the wrath of Rupert should the plan fail. I don’t know, really, I do not know. But if you take last week’s episode of Sandra wanting to get rid of Rupert with this week’s vote, something is clearly going on. Either way, Rupert’s torch is snuffed and he will have to wait till next season’s ASS to relive his dreams.

Here is a note about his parting thoughts… Rupert clearly wears his heart on his sleeves at all times. Of course, at the time of his final confessional I did say out loud and to whomever else was in the room that his dreams should not be placed above the rest and he is not more important than any other. But, I was forced to remember the shock I had when I left the game. At a brief moment in time you feel like a looser. It takes time to put things back in perspective but eventually time heals all wounds. I will never forget the moment of being voted out; it hurt, really, really, really bad. Don’t judge Rupert too harshly on his parting thoughts, he is only human and this is after all just a game.

It is just a game with real people who have real lives and real feelings. We at the 6 family suffered a horrible tragedy. This last Wednesday Jenna lost her mom. Carla Morasca battled breast cancer for 10 years and finally succumbed to the disease. But in her life she taught her child to dream and to hope. Jenna defied the odds, and this 21-year-old swimsuit model beat 15 other people to become the sole Survivor. Editing did very little to bring out the smart, witty, intelligent girl that Jenna really is. Jenna found it difficult and gut wrenching to leave her mother to participate in this game. Carla convinced Jenna to go. Jenna did not play this game for the fame or fortune; she did it for her Mom. I had the tremendous pleasure of meeting this fabulous woman and am I proud to say that I met a true hero and a true Survivor. My heart and my prayers go out to Jenna, her father Mike and Carla’s surviving family. God be with you.
