SURVIVOR PHOENIX
by Deena Bennett
November 17, 2003
To all my loyal and not so loyal readers, I’m back. I took a brief respite in order to complete a homicide trial and a rape trial. For crying out loud, can’t we all just get along? Now onto more important things……
This is just a casual observation on my part, but attorneys suck at this game. While Stacey Stillman (Survivor 1) has done much to continue her game well into this 7th season, it is in a completely different arena. As for Clarence, Andrew and myself, well winners none of us. Perhaps we were just too much of a threat, sharks in tattered clothing as it were.
Andrew went too early in my book. He did well to take his ragamuffin team as far as he did and I am sorry he was not rewarded with a seat on the jury. Andrew really was the first real threat to be booted from this game. From here on out there will be much jockeying for position and many new alliances formed.
Where did Andrew go once he parted company with Balboa? Truth is I have no idea. Jury members and non-jury members are separated from one another, at least they were in the Amazon. Heck I can’t even tell you all were I went, violation of super secret rules dontcha know. In fact once the game has ended, the entire cast is not allowed any contact with each other until the finale. This rule I am sure was violated, but we were under strict orders not to converse. But let me make one thing absolutely clear, when we went to final TC, we did not know who the winner was. (Naturally I had inkling)
Why all the secrecy? I have a number of theories. However, I will state with some certainty that the biggest reason is to keep the game pure, to make sure there is no suggestion or swaying of vote. (Please refer to Stillman’s lawsuit) Also secrecy is needed to prevent ChillOne’s from spoiling the adventure for the viewing public. I have heard Mark Burnett state on more than one occasion that he wants Survivor to be a “totally organic experience” for all participants. If we chat with one another then the natural inclination is to tell what happened. And then they tell two friends and so on and so on.
People often ask me what I, the second member of the jury, did once I was off. Okay, I thought a lot about how I sucked at the game and I reconfigured in my mind a gazillion times how I should have done things differently. I thought about it sober and I thought about it not so sober. But the number one rule that we all abided by was that we did not talk about whom we would vote for and whom we wanted to win. We chatted briefly about what had happened when we were all together in the game, what we all saw, but nothing substantial and nothing too involved. We all took that time to really get to know each other and to share in hopes and dreams, not just food fantasies.
The game my fellow survivor junkies, remains pure by those on the jury, by those who are expected to vote. It did, at least with the jury of the Amazon. I expect it will for PI too.
Can you pick a winner from this group of nine? Sure you have your favorites and those you definitely do not want to win, but very few could say with any degree of certainty who will win. There are just too many factors to be considered in this game.
By day 24, attitudes stink. You cannot escape the day-to-day tedium of just existing. You get up, you get wood, and you boil water, blah blah blah. I understand Darrah’s mindset; okay perhaps not what she is saying or even why she would say it at TC. She is fighting for her life and she goes TC postal. While everyone is grumpy, and you are free to go off at confessional, do not go off at your fellow mates at TC. You remember every sour word, every angry look and you just need an excuse to go after someone.
While the daily life is exhausting, the mental portion pushes you over the edge. Often you just sit in silence as you move players on your imaginary chessboard. By day 24 when Dave left, I was thinking about whom I could beat in the final two. I played scenario after scenario in my mind. Every player on PI is probably thinking the same thing. But each should be prepared to back stab and lie. This game lends itself to dishonesty and manipulation. It is the way that it is played and it is the way it should be played.
Lillian, God bless her, is bothered by lying and refuses to do so. Why play? My respect goes to the chicas Sandra and Christa for recognizing that they need to take out Rupert. This game is not about surviving the island/jungle. It is about social dynamics. Jon, while a weasel, understands this and is willing to adapt. Where is the strength in this game at this point? Sandra. She is my first pick to go to the final three.
Only in a MB world would a Spanish speaking Latina finish first in a game set in a Panamanian country. Sandra orchestrated the Burton ousting by recognizing that she needed Rupert for provisions. She also started the let us oust Rupert thing with the Christa chick, but once again she is wary of how long they can last without food. She has a plan and I am sticking with her.
What about the rest of the tribe? Rupert, still a favorite, is cutting the line a bit thin for me. He rules by fear. He seems so angry to me all of the time. I am sure he is beat down like the rest and certainly he does 800 times more work than the rest. But do they all need to fear him? Nobody dared put a coconut in his box except whom? That would be Sandra. Christa, who has been relatively cool under pressure committed one of the 10 deadly survivor sins, “Thou shalt not be mean at TC.” Christa is an important player but I fear that we saw the beginning of her end.
I am somewhat lost over the Darrah, Lil, Burton, and T thing. I do not believe there is enough there to worry about. Burton will always be considered an outcast and is too strong a threat to get much further. Lil will be carried along because she poses no threat; she is a Butch, a hardworking over all good-hearted person.
Still, in my book the person who should be looking for the knives is Rupert. He is just too much of a good thing. But for whoever gets booted this Thursday, you are in good company. This was after all, my boot episode.
