DEENA'S DOCKET: E7a - Anger Management

Deena's Docket SURVIVOR PHOENIX
by Deena Bennett
October 31, 2003

I have two words for Drake…ANGER MANAGEMENT. Rupert, Rupert, Rupert, in California we call that a violation of Penal Code Section 240, commonly referred to as Assault punishable up to 6 months in county jail and a $1000.00 fine. But it just goes to show you that even kind-hearted, down right good people get emotionally jacked during this social experiment we call survivor. I however, am prepared to forgive this “troubled teens mentor” because as you might surmise, Jon deserved it, sort of.

All players are subject to the whims and fancy of editing. But there really is only so much spin you can put on stuff. Because let’s be realistic, we are responsible for everything we say and everything we do. They film you 24/7 and sometimes you will slip; it is inevitable. Drake is by far a more confrontational, verbally demeaning, and violent group of people than the Amazon ever was. These aren’t slips.

I recall that in the Amazon we had whining, complaining, and the infamous hand. We had the blow-ups with Rob and the girls, the girls and Joanna, and Roger and well, lots of people. But I do not recall a single event of F yous flying back and forth and certainly not with regularity as they are in the Drake camp. Might I just pose the following question, how is this helpful to overall team dynamics? It isn’t and we all know that. This is an incredibly dysfunctional team that is held together by a single alliance of Sandra, Christa, and Rupert. With each passing day they become weaker, mentally. Only a merge will breathe new life into these folks.

And gosh what about that Ghost tribe? I am somewhat torn over that whole issue to be perfectly honest. My party line as you of course all know is great, yippee, the greatest twist of all time. But part of me, that ex-player part, says that just royally sucks. It just isn’t fair. But that last remaining part of me says good for them, good for the Outcasts. Nobody was cheering harder for them but me during that challenge.

I understand the anger of the tribesmen over this twist. You work so hard, you endure so much and you succeeded where the others failed. Jeff says that they have been living on limited rations as well. Whoopee! It is not the same. Do you really think they had the same amount of food as Morgan? I don’t. The Outcasts had no cameras, they were not forced to think about the game, and they certainly did not have to make nice to people who deserve the wrath of God to descend upon them. In essence they had a break. I get Andrew’s harsh words. What he is saying is I played this game and I deserve to still be here; they lost and do not deserve this second chance. Think ahead for a moment, will Shawn or Osten (should he come to his senses once he has eaten) be given a second chance. I doubt it. So, I guess from that standpoint it is inherently unfair. But life is rarely fair.

So they are all generally pissed off and deservedly so but how they handle that anger and how they plan for the twist will be critical. The outcasts are coming back, two of them and if I were a target in the tribes (listen up Jon) I would go after their support with a vengeance. These two people and I am banking on Burton and Lil, are out for revenge and are determined. Because they know what it is like to be branded a Loohoozer, to have your life and your torch snuffed out.

Let me make one thing absolutely clear, just because they lost in this game, does not make them a looser in life, Jon. You are nothing more than a pawn in this game. In my opinion every life offers something, every person has a gift and a calling. (Excuse me whilst I sand upon my soapbox) Do not ever assume that your life is somehow greater than another’s. Speaking to Jon of course, last time I checked your exotic art job could easily equate to man who looks at porn. Who am I to judge; I am just trying to give some perspective. Still, I do understand your disappointment, just not your misplaced hostility.

They get a second chance, live with it, get over it, and more importantly, use it to your advantage. Sadly Osten will not get the second chance. His torch was set down and now everybody is yelling quitter. But here is the thing, had his team wished for Osten to stay you would have seen a vote and Osten would have stayed. But because the team was granting his wishes, what you saw was the wrath of the TV gods on Osten. They made him look like a quitter, but they would have done the same for Shawna or Jenna had the team granted their wishes to get out. But either way you go, Osten will have to live with that for the rest of his life and for that my heart goes out to him.

Jeff suggested that it was hard getting in this game and there are too many other people who want so badly to play that Osten should not quit. There is nothing like suffering the wrath of Probst at TC. You can almost feel the seething anger when the camera pauses on “the look”. Many who have gone before have received that look. Roger, Joanna, Rob C, and Heidi. I was there for it and even though Jeff is not looking at you and the anger is not directed at you, you avert your attention to the fire or your feet. In the back of your mind you think, wholly crap something bad is gonna happen to me tonight. Osten handled himself with dignity and deserves some respect for this gracious quit. For the record, in every season somebody has wanted out. Bebe from season one through Shawna in season 6.

Once you are off reality the real reality, sets in. That is why the Outcasts were so strong mentally. I rooted for them to win, to beat both Drake and Morgan. And I think essentially it goes back to my whole thing with the underdog. But more importantly, I know what it is like to sit on the boat ride home and to feel utterly hopeless about getting booted from this game. Burton, conveyed this thought better than I ever could. You saw the tears in his eyes, the need for redemption. I wanted them to win so somebody could vindicate my ousting, vicariously.

There is no room for error for anyone now, certainly not the Outcasts. I am guessing that one person from each tribe will be chosen to go back into the game. Burton is a likely candidate because but for him, they would not have won that challenge. I also pick Lil. I do so because of her temperament and her likeability. The Outcasts will vote the “old broad” to get a second chance. Of course I could be way off base with my guess, who knows. What I do know is that I love this game and everything about it, especially those twists that I really love to hate.

Finally, I want to pass along some personal notes. I would like to wish a happy birthday to my friends Heidi and Rob. These are two unique individuals, two people I would have never had contact with but for the game. My life is all the better because they walked into my life and shared an experience with me. I also want to wish all the best for those competing in ASS. Rumors are that they leave soon. While my career and my obligation and commitment to my husband and two little boys would not permit me to join you in this adventure, an itty bitty part of me wishes I was going (very itty bitty mind you).

My heart and prayers are with the families who have lost so much in the Southern California wild fires. While the fire was within a few miles, I was not personally affected, but so many I know were. We have been walking in ash and soot for the last week. You get somewhat annoyed at all the dirty air until you realize that this was somebody’s life that burned up. Thank you to all the firefighters who are risking their lives to save somebody’s hopes and dreams. To me the true measure of a hero is somebody who is willing to give the greatest sacrifice for somebody they don’t even know. They are all heroes. When faced with a tragedy of this magnitude I can’t help but thinking, Survivor isn’t really reality television, it’s a reality break.
