DEENA'S DOCKET: E4 - Respect for the Game

Deena's Docket SURVIVOR PHOENIX

Buck Rogers once said, “There are countless ways of attaining greatness, but any road to reaching one's maximum potential must be built on a bedrock of respect for the individual, a commitment to excellence, and a rejection of mediocrity.” In one fell swoop of a three-day period, Drake has gone from excellence and is now meandering upon the borders of mediocrity. It all hinges on respect and their (collective use) lack of respect. Not just respect for others but respect for the game itself.

Earlier this week I predicted good things for Morgan and darn if I was not right. One thing you can say for them is at the very least they are united in their adversity. There is no screaming, no condescending attitudes and no casual indifference to the game. (Whining does not really count, ‘cause we all do it.) They respect each other and understand the difficulties that each one is faced with and are collectively attempting to overcome those difficulties. Yes, I like the underdog mentality, but they are in there fighting and have not given up, so I say, good for them.

I sense leadership, true leadership abilities with Rupert and now maybe Morgan can go into every challenge with a plan and some sense. Hopefully Rupert won’t send Osten into the water when we all know Osten can’t swim. Rupert might also recognize that with the tide getting higher and higher, Morgan’s shelter will soon be underwater (please refer back to Australia and the riverbed flood). Like a sand wall is going to help! Rupert is the glue that this tribe needs. Mark my words, Morgan shall overcome.

On the other hand, I’ve lost all respect for Drake. In the Amazon we had the girls and in the Pearl Islands we have, strike that, had the boys. It is the boys who are, yes, very attractive and, yes, not afraid to let everyone know it. Grandiose behavior, however, will get you nothing but a one-way ticket to Looser Lodge, ask Burton.

So, Drake is so confident in their position in this game that they are willing to throw a challenge to get rid of “dead weight”. A game I might add, that has no rules, has no direction, and a game the prides itself on blindsiding the participants. It is a game that demands respect. Drake will learn this lesson the hard way. The TV gods have been angered. A vast yee maties thee best be thar prepared to walk the plank!

For those of you who don’t know, Executive Producer Mark Burnett and his glorious right hand man Jeff Probst, have any amazing effect over the forces of nature out in “the game”. If you piss them off, the weather suddenly turns horrible. If there is anger and dissension amongst the tribe, the bugs and creatures start to swarm and eat you alive. If you intentionally loose a challenge, only prayers to God can help avert the natural disasters and injuries that are bound to happen.

Rupert is right, never give anything less than your best. Now Rupert is gone and Drake will be forced to fend for itself. But fear not, Jon the puppet master, is there to keep the tribe together. Right! It could have been the alcohol, but was there a serious lack of synapse activity going on in his brain at TC? Rule #2 for those keeping track, do not piss of the host / umpire of Survivor. Goodbye Jon, if not next week then soon.

Survivor is a small yet extreme model of life. But from the players that have gone before and that are soon to go, we can all take away this one little lesson, it is not whether you win or loose, it is how you play the game. It all begins with respect.
